ie: It slows things down to a more measured, entertaining, pace, and gives you an interesting mechanic you have to always figure into your plans. It keeps you from being able to just stomp through Europe as much as you please without having to worry about having multiple factions unite against you. IMO, the strategy of having to work out ways to use the Papacy to your advantage, as a Catholic faction, is a really nice gameplay element.

BUT, you can manipulate the Papacy enough to have a pretty free hand in European politics. You won't be able to always do whatever you want and not raise the anger of the Pope, especially if your conquering left-and-right.

Build churches, convert the population, raise your priests to cardinals, donate money to the church (Keep a Diplomat near Rome at all times and give them money when you can spare it) and, ultimately, get enough cardinals so that you always have a good chane of getting one of your own faction elected as Pope. Remember that each character can have a limited amount of ancillaries but an unlimited amount of traits. This one goes into more detail in regards to AI behaviour (and thus the Pope's). Always select the character you want to apply the trait or ancillary to. Personally, only have played 1 campaign with these personalities and haven't found much difficulty, then again, I was playing as Hungary which put me pretty much out of 90% of the fighting due to the position of my realm. Changing these personalities around should make the game more interesting. By default, the AI personalities in Med 2 are Balanced - Smith. The long campaign requires the player to. The short campaign requires the player to defeat one or two enemy factions (for example, Holy Roman Empire must defeat its historical enemies Milan and Denmark) and control at least 15 settlements. The discussion is on a Rome Total War forum but the personalities in Rome and Medieval 2 are shared. The goal of the campaign depends on which type of campaign is played.

You just fart in the general direction of your Christian enemy and he'll bring fury and fire down upon you should you attack. Hah, you find the Pope annoying in vanilla, wait till you change the personality of the faction to a more religious playstyle.
